Did you know June is Scams Awareness Month?
Run by Citizens Advice, the #ScamAware campaign aims to create a network of confident, alert consumers who know what to do when they see a scam. Under the specific message of ‘Stop, Report, Talk’, the campaign encourages us to be more cautious and seek advice, to report anything suspicious, and to speak out about any of our scam experiences.
With the internet now playing a major role in our everyday lives, and revolutionising the way businesses operate, it’s vital that we can recognise and protect ourselves from online scams, including phishing emails, social media and scareware.
To get involved, you can share your knowledge of scams on social media using #ScamAware, or report any scam you’ve encountered to the Action Fraud team. All businesses are also encouraged to self-report fraud, or get in touch with our team for more advice.
Examples of newest scams in 2019
A recent report released by Citizens Advice estimates that almost three-quarters of people have been targeted by scammers in the last 2 years. These scams can be targeted at both individuals and businesses, so all of us are at risk. Some examples include:
- ‘Investment scams’ – where the scammer may offer shares, or a range of investment “opportunities” including wine, overseas land investments, precious metals and gems.
- ‘Shopping fraud scams’ – when items are bought online but are never delivered.
- Computer software service and internet provider scams – cold callers and hackers that access personal and financial information
- Pension scams – calculating that 8.4 million people have been offered unsolicited pension advice or reviews since April 2015
