June marks Scams Awareness Month, an opportunity for people to stand up to predatory practices and crimes that affect millions of people in the UK. 72% of people surveyed had been targeted by scammers in just a two year period from 2015-2017 according to Citizens Advice research. Worse still a third of those people have been targeted at least five times.

Following last year’s successful campaign, 2018 aims to continue reporting more scams. In the latest year figures from the Crime Survey England and Wales, revealed an increase of 7% in the total number of fraud offences reported bringing the total up to 662,519. The increase was largely owed to offences reported to Action Fraud, which rose by 18%.

The campaign will run throughout June and is headed by the CTSI. The proposed them is ‘Don’t Miss a Trick, Be Scam Aware’.

If you’re worried that a vulnerable friend or relative may be at risk of exploitation, be #ScamAware and report any incident of fraud you have seen to the authorities, such as the Action Fraud team.
