Breaking News: The Ban on Evictions Will Now Extend Beyond 23 August 2020

Ban on Evictions post COVID-19

One week ago, we provided an update on the impending lift of the ban on evictions – see Reactivating possession proceedings stayed as a result of Covid-19.

The lift of the ban on evictions was due to take place on 23 August 2020 and meant that those cases already in the court system could be reactivated, any possession orders made prior to the ban could be enforced, and any new cases could proceed as ‘normal’- i.e. they would be issued and subsequently served upon tenants.

However, there has today been a ‘U turn’, with the effect being that the ban on evictions is set to remain in full force for a further 4 weeks until 20 September 2020. This means that no progress will be made in respect of those claims already in the system, and for any new claims issued, these will not proceed any further than being issued (i.e. logged on the court’s system) at this stage.
